The York County SPCA was founded in 1926. In 1968 the shelter relocated to Thomasville, PA, York County. The York County SPCA is an independent humane organization with no affiliation with other organizations including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
The York County SPCA is a nonprofit organization with no access to tax funding other than the $20 per stray dog fee we receive from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Dog Law, which in no manner covers our costs. We currently receive no state funding for stray cats. The York County SPCA operates primarily on private donations.
York County SPCA serves as a temporary home each year to over 4,300 stray, lost and unwanted animals. Sadly, there are too many animals and not enough homes. The York County SPCA stresses the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Pet overpopulation is an epidemic not only for York County, but across the nation. The York County SPCA is the recipient of the effect of pet overpopulation and we are challenged each day to find alternatives other than euthanasia. The York County SPCA is committed to placing as many animals in loving, caring homes as is possible. Please remember to visit the York County SPCA when looking for a pet.
In June of 2006, The York County SPCA realized a long time goal of opening a new facility. The new 17,000 square ft. shelter is conveniently located at 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, Pa 17406. The new building allows us to house and care for a significantly larger amount of animals than at our previous facility. A new veterinary wing was also added to treat sick and injured animals and to provide spay/neuter services for our shelter pets and for the public. Please visit our new site and adopt a friend for life!
